5 Social Media Safety Tips

One: What Not To Do

Don’t provide personal information that can compromise your safety. For example: your home address, phone number, credit card information, social security number, etc.  Don’t announce details of your everyday schedule or future plans, such as your vacation dates or work hours. Don’t provide photos of your home or vehicles.

Two: Think Before You Post

You never know who will come across your personal page but you can make a good impression in case anyone is looking. Here’s how: Keep controversial topics to a minimum (such as political debates, religious views, and so forth), maintain professional and appropriate speech, and forego evocative or unprofessional photos.

Three: Online History

Some social media sites will keep a record of websites, videos and photos you have viewed and post them to your Facebook timeline for everyone to view. Be cautious of this and update your security preferences.

Four: “Tagging”

Set your personal preferences to ask for permission before anyone tags you in an inappropriate or unflattering photo.

Five: Extra Caution

Don’t underestimate the internet or those using it. Almost anyone can find a way to hack into your accounts and steal personal information so always check and double-check your privacy settings and passwords to ensure that no one can access your information without your knowledge.
